At the 2006 Miami Book Fair International, I participated in panel entitled "Family Secrets, Family Truths: American Immigrant Stories." The other panelists included Michael Patrick MacDonald, author of Easter Rising: An Irish American Coming Up from Under, and Maria Elena Salinas, Univision anchor and author of I Am My Father’s Daughter: Living A Life Without Secrets. Christopher Kenneally, Director of Author and Creator Relations at Copyright Clearance Center, interviewed each author and moderated the conversation that followed. We discussed the challenge of writing about hidden family histories and how those secrets relate to larger national silences and forms of dissembling.
A podcast recording of our conversation is available through Beyond the Book (search for "Family Secrets, Family Truths"), or listen by clicking the play button below.
